Advanced CES in TESOL

Aims of the Course    

For this Certificate Programme as a whole, the overall aim is to provide a thorough introduction to the theory and methodology of teaching English to speakers of other languages.

General Objectives

The general objectives of the course require each student to be able to:

a)   The candidate should be able to demonstrate a sound grasp of the basic phonological, lexical, syntactical, and other aspects of modern communicative English, with particular reference to its roles as a medium of communication.
b)   The candidate should be able to identify the needs of ESOL learners at various age and proficiency levels, and modify such a needs analysis in the light of observation and testing.
c)   The candidate should be able to write instructional objectives and prepare appropriate lesson plans.
d)   The candidate should be able to discuss intelligently a repertoire of teaching and learning resources.

TOTAL DURATION IN HOURS: 250 HOURS

Module 1 - The Fundamentals::

This module is divided into four units and gives the candidate information about:

  Language teaching, language learning: approaches to teaching English
  Working in the classroom: the teacher, the classroom and teaching skills
  Language awareness: the grammar of English and how to approach it
  Issues in presenting new language: how to do present language in a practical way
Module 2 - Teaching the Four Language Skills:

This module is divided into four units and gives the candidate information about

  Speaking - how to teach speaking skills: teaching the sounds, stress and intonation of English
  Listening - how to teach listening skills: practical approaches you can use in the classroom
  Reading - how to teach reading skills: practical ideas in teaching intensive and extensive reading
  Writing - how to teach writing skills: from individual sentences to descriptive passages
Module 3 - Practical Skills for the TESOL teacher:

This unit is divided into four units and gives the candidate information about:

  Lesson planning: a template for the preparation of your lessons
  Teaching vocabulary: how to teach new language quickly and clearly
  Practical language activities: a collection of practical and enjoyable teaching activities
  esting in the classroom: a practical approach to assessing your students
Module 4 - Theory and Practical Application:

This unit is divided into four units and gives the candidate information about:

  An Introduction to Linguistics: an overview of the major areas of linguistic study that have contributed to TESOL
  An Introduction to Psycholinguistics: an overview of theories of language acquisition and their application to TESOL
  More on Lesson Planning and Teaching: more practical ideas on how to plan your lessons
  Preparing Your Own Material: a range of effective ideas on developing classroom materials
